Experience
CURATOR
  • Served in various curatorial positions relating to American Indian and Hispanic arts for the Taylor Museum for Southwestern Studies of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center (1973-1977)
  • Initiated a physical inventory of the collection (more than 7,000 items).
  • Created a new cataloging system, including accession cards, cross-referencing scheme, photographs, and storage by tribe, resulting in a more efficient retrieval process.
  • Reclassified prehistoric pottery according to industry standards.
  • Implemented a new systematic inspection of textiles for descriptive, conservation, and display purposes.
  • Experienced in conservation practices, including santos, leather, weaving, pottery, basketry, and metal.
  • Instrumental in the founding of a regional conservation center and laboratory that is now established at the University of Denver.
  • Conceptualized, designed, and installed 39 exhibitions of both in-house and traveling collections.

EDUCATOR

  • Created a strong foundation for the new Anthropology Department of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs; chaired department for four years and developed the curriculum for all classes.
  • Enthusiastically taught both upper and lower division classes for 16 years, including such courses as Introduction to Physical and Cultural Anthropology, North American Archeology, Southwestern Archeology, High Civilizations of the Americas, Prehistory and History of the Native American Southwest, Southwest Indian Art, Native American Cultures of the Southwest, among others.
  • Noted for creating a classroom atmosphere that engaged each student and created a learning environment where students learned without realizing they were being taught.

APPRAISER

  • Professional appraiser since 1977; participated with Sotheby's consultants in the Denver Museum of Natural History's public fund raising appraisals, in addition to others.
  • Specialized in prehistoric, historic, and contemporary Southwestern arts: weavings (blankets and rugs), basketry, pottery, kachinas and jewelry.
  • Appraised Plains beadwork, California and Basin basketry, Hispanic and Northwest Coastal wood carvings, etc.
  • Researched and documented confidential and factual appraisals based on current comparisons.
  • Opinions were sought by insurance adjusters, bankers, museums, galleries, colleges, estates, corporations and private individuals, including the Phoenix Heard Museum, Chicago Field Museum of Natural History, Denver Museum of Natural History, Harvard University, Anthropology Museum at the University of Colorado, Florida Museum of Natural History, California Academy of Sciences, Washington State Historical Society, El Pomar Foundation, Alaska State Museum, Seattle Thomas Burke Museum, Anthropology Museum of the University of Colorado, Ute Pass Historical Museum, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, among others.

DIRECTOR OF EXCURSIONS

  • Conducted more than 130 private and public tours for students, individuals, museums, and tour companies throughout the American Southwest and Mexico.
  • Clients included the Denver Museum of Natural History, California Academy of Sciences, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Phoenix Heard Museum, Nature Exhibitions International, Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, University of New Mexico, Cincinnati Museum of Natural History, among others.
  • Tours were featured in articles in Travel and Leisure and American Way magazines.
  • Made personal reconnaissance and missions trips to Canada, Central and South America, Russia, India, China, Phillipines, the Caribbean, Western and Eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Orient.

BROKER / CONSULTANT

  • Self-employed art broker and consultant since 1977; traveled through the Southwest annually to research Indian tribes and their arts, crafts, and cultures.
  • Conducted private showings of Indian art / artifacts, participated in Native American art shows nationwide, and ultimately opened a retail store in 1997 (Ethnographique Emporium, Colorado Springs).
  • Made personal contacts worldwide in order to provide access to fine Native American art work not available to the average collector.
